The Tech Sales Interview Playbook

Preview this playbookA tech sales recruiter screen is a first check of fit, motivation, and practical constraints. Prepare a short explanation of your background, two relevant examples, and the questions that could change whether you continue. You do not need to squeeze a full sales presentation into an introductory call.
Interview sequences differ. GitLab's published sales-development hiring process includes a recruiter screen before later interviews. Your invitation is the source for your employer's actual sequence; the preparation below is our own practice framework.
Build a 45-second introduction
Use three sentences: what you do now, the evidence that connects it to the role, and why this opening interests you. Give enough detail for a follow-up question. Avoid listing every job or saying you are passionate about technology without explaining what that means in this role.
Original example for a fictional customer-service candidate: “I handle customer questions and scheduling for a regional service business. I enjoy finding the reason behind a request and keeping follow-up organized; last quarter I also helped document our repeat questions. I'm exploring SDR work because I want to develop prospecting skills, and your opening interests me because the buyers are operations teams I already speak with.” Replace the evidence with your own work.
Prepare for these five questions
| Question | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Why are you considering a move? | A forward-looking reason connected to the work |
| Why sales? | An example of initiating a conversation and handling uncertainty |
| Why this company? | One researched buyer problem and one question about it |
| What experience is relevant? | A specific action, result, and honest limit to your ownership |
| What are your expectations? | Location, timing, and questions about the written pay structure |
For pay, ask how base and variable compensation are structured and whether the stated range applies to your location and level. A headline OTE is not guaranteed pay. If information is missing, record the question rather than agreeing to an assumption.
Use the screen to evaluate the opening
Ask whether the role is inbound, outbound, or mixed; what a new rep is expected to learn first; and who manages the team. These answers help you prepare for the next stage. A title alone does not tell you how the team works.
Before the call ends, confirm the next stage, its format, and any preparation instructions. Update one row in your application tracker with the actual answer and next action. Do not count the recruiter conversation as a separate job application.
Rehearse once, then shorten
Record a practice introduction and listen for claims that would be difficult to explain. Remove unnecessary chronology. Ask a partner one unexpected follow-up, such as what you would find difficult about outbound work. A useful answer can acknowledge that you are learning while describing how you would practice. Memorizing a perfect paragraph makes that follow-up harder, not easier.
