Preview this playbookAn AE interview deal walkthrough should explain how a customer reached a decision and what you contributed. Choose a deal you know well, describe the initial uncertainty, and identify the choices that changed the process. The contract value gives context; it does not explain your judgment.
GitLab's commercial AE role description includes ownership of buying criteria, next steps, and forecasting. Use that as role context, not as a universal interview scoring sheet. The panel's assignment determines your time, format, and required topics.
Choose a deal with inspectable decisions
A moderate deal you owned can provide stronger evidence than a large team win where your contribution was narrow. Pick a case where you can explain the buyer's starting situation, alternatives, stakeholder roles, and a significant obstacle. Anonymize customer details and omit confidential terms.
Build a five-part outline: starting problem, qualification, turning point, decision process, and retrospective. For a short interview, use one visual timeline instead of a slide for every meeting.
An original fictional turning point
Imagine a scheduling-software evaluation. The operations lead likes the workflow, but finance has not agreed how to assess value. The rep initially pushes for a proposal, then realizes the buyer lacks an agreed baseline. The useful decision is to pause the proposal and arrange a measurement discussion with the people who own staffing data.
In a walkthrough, explain what you observed, why you changed course, and what the discussion established. Do not present a fictional example as your work. Use it to test whether your real story contains an equally clear decision.
Prepare evidence for the panel's questions
| Panel question | Useful evidence |
|---|---|
| Why was the customer considering change? | A documented workflow problem or priority |
| Who could stop the purchase? | Actual approval roles and unresolved concerns |
| What did you personally do? | Research, conversations, coordination, or negotiation you owned |
| Why did the deal progress? | A buyer action, not only an internal stage change |
| What would you change? | A specific earlier question or different decision |
Be ready to distinguish a helpful contact from a confirmed decision-maker. Explain how you learned about the process rather than claiming you knew it from the first call.
Handle numbers carefully
Use approved, nonconfidential figures or clearly labeled ranges if necessary. Explain whether a number refers to contract value, annual recurring revenue, or another measure. Do not disclose restricted customer information to make the story sound more impressive.
Finish with the outcome and one limitation in your approach. A win can still contain weak qualification or unnecessary delay. A loss can still demonstrate sound judgment if you explain what the evidence showed and why you stopped investing in the opportunity. Rehearse interruptions so the story remains useful when the panel changes direction.
