Preview this playbookA job post can suggest a workflow worth researching, but it does not prove budget, urgency, or dissatisfaction. Verify that the opening is current, connect its responsibilities to a relevant question, and let the prospect correct your hypothesis. Avoid turning every hiring announcement into the same congratulatory pitch.
GitLab's prospecting handbook describes coordinated account prospecting. The hiring-signal worksheet here is our own research exercise.
Capture the fact precisely
Record the public source, date checked, role, and relevant responsibility. “The company lists a support-operations manager opening” is a fact you can verify. “The company is overwhelmed by support failures” is an inference that the posting does not establish.
A reposted role may replace an employee rather than signal growth. A broad job description may describe ongoing work rather than a new project. Write at least one alternative explanation before deciding that the signal warrants outreach.
| Research layer | Fictional example |
|---|---|
| Observed fact | Role description mentions shift handoff ownership |
| Possible implication | Handoff consistency may be an area of work |
| Alternative | The process may already be mature |
| Question | Is the new role changing how shifts coordinate? |
Write an original bounded message
“Morgan, your support-operations opening mentions ownership across shifts. Is the new role changing that workflow, or maintaining the current process? We work on making the latest action visible to the next owner; I can share an example if that is relevant.”
The opening explains why you chose the question without announcing that you have diagnosed an internal problem. Check that the product sentence is accurate before adapting it.
Decide whether the signal is enough
If you cannot connect the role to a buyer responsibility your product addresses, skip the message. Relevance is not created by adding a job title to a generic email. Check account ownership and existing activity before contacting anyone.
Review the research, not just replies
For a practice set, inspect three public role descriptions and write a fact, hypothesis, and alternative for each. Choose one you would not use. Have a colleague identify any claim in your draft that goes beyond the source.
Track whether your research was accurate and whether the question received a substantive answer. A reply saying the hypothesis is wrong is useful feedback. It should improve targeting rather than be reclassified as hidden buying interest.
