Inspect the sample and contentsA useful demo interview connects a customer's problem to something the audience can observe. Start with the assignment, choose one workflow and rehearse the questions that could interrupt it. A polished feature tour can still leave the panel wondering why the customer should care.
Interview formats vary. For one employer-specific example, GitLab's published SA panel instructions combine discovery, a tailored demonstration and discussion. Use your own invitation for the product, timing and permitted materials. The rehearsal structure below is our original recommendation, not an employer scoring rubric.
Turn the invitation into a brief
Write down the audience, their decision, the product you may use and the time you have. Confirm whether discovery is part of the exercise or whether the brief supplies those facts. Separate facts from assumptions before building slides.
- Who is in the room, and what does each person need to understand?
- What customer workflow is the assignment about?
- Which outcome can you demonstrate with the environment provided?
- What must remain an open technical question?
- Are recordings, screenshots or a backup walkthrough permitted?
Use the free demo planner to create a one-page rehearsal brief. It works without signup and exports your notes as a text file.
Build one original practice scenario
Imagine a fictional support team that loses track of escalations between shifts. The operations lead wants clear ownership; an administrator needs to understand assignment rules. Your practice environment contains synthetic tickets and a routing rule you configured yourself.
Open with the operational question: when an urgent ticket changes queues, can the next owner see what happened? Show one unassigned ticket, apply the rule, then inspect the owner and activity history. Explain the configuration that made this example work.
Do not claim that the demonstration proves lower response times across a real support organization. It shows a bounded workflow in a practice environment. A later evaluation would need agreed data, exceptions and measurements. That boundary gives the panel something concrete to discuss.
Budget the conversation
For an original 20-minute practice session, try this allocation. Adjust it to the actual assignment; a recruiter may give you a very different format.
| Segment | Minutes | Work to complete |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | 2 | Confirm the audience, purpose and agenda |
| Discover | 4 | Ask questions that could change your chosen workflow |
| Demonstrate | 8 | Show the starting state, action and observable result |
| Discuss | 4 | Address limitations, objections and unresolved questions |
| Close | 2 | Recap the evidence and propose the next validation step |
Rehearse the short version too. If discovery takes longer, remove a secondary feature rather than speaking twice as fast. Keep enough time to state what the demonstration established and what still needs checking.
Handle an interruption without guessing
Suppose the panel asks whether the rule can use a field from an external system. Explain what your current example uses and clarify the required source, update frequency and failure behavior. If you have not checked the integration, say so. Describe how you would verify it instead of inventing a supported feature.
If the demo fails, acknowledge the observed failure. Spend a bounded amount of time recovering, then use an allowed backup or explain the intended flow clearly. Distinguish a screenshot of an earlier result from a result you just produced live.
Review the rehearsal
Ask a practice partner to record where the explanation became unclear, where a claim lacked evidence and whether you answered the actual question. Pick one correction for the next attempt. Record yourself only with the participants' permission and use synthetic information.
