Preview this playbookFor an SDR cold email interview assignment, follow the brief before optimizing the prose. Identify the intended buyer, use allowed research, make one plausible problem hypothesis, and ask for a proportionate next step. Be ready to explain why each sentence belongs in the email.
Writing assessments are a real part of some hiring processes: GitLab lists a final writing assessment in its sales-development process. That does not establish the format of your task. Confirm the instructions, word limit, and rules for assistance or AI tools with the employer.
Turn the assignment into a brief
Write down the product, target role, scenario, required deliverable, and deadline. Separate supplied facts from research and assumptions. If the brief does not identify a specific account, use the permitted hypothetical account rather than collecting personal information about a real prospect unnecessarily.
Find one business fact that could connect to a workflow problem. A company expanding its support team may have more coordination work, but the hiring announcement does not prove that its current software is failing.
Original fictional email example
Subject: Support handoffs across shifts
Hi Morgan — your assignment brief mentions that Northstar is adding a second support shift. How are unresolved tickets handed over today?
Our fictional product keeps ownership and the latest action together so the next shift can see where to start. If handoffs are part of the rollout, would comparing that workflow be useful?
Thanks, Alex
The message uses a fact from the fictional brief, asks a workflow question, and makes a bounded product statement. It does not invent a customer result, claim to know the buyer's internal problems, or imply an existing relationship.
Explain the reasoning after the draft
| Choice | Explanation to prepare |
|---|---|
| Subject line | Names the workflow rather than manufacturing urgency |
| Opening | Uses a verified fact from the exercise |
| Question | Tests the hypothesis instead of declaring pain |
| Product sentence | Connects a capability to the workflow |
| Ask | Gives the recipient a small, relevant decision |
If the interviewer asks for a revision, explain what new information changes your draft. A different buyer may need a different problem statement, not merely a different job title in the greeting.
Submit a defensible assignment
Check the requested file format and whether supporting notes are allowed. Remove placeholders, unsupported metrics, and links you have not checked. Do not send the exercise to a real prospect unless the employer has explicitly instructed and authorized that action.
Practice a short verbal explanation of your choices. If you used an allowed tool, disclose its role when requested and be able to defend the final work yourself. A polished email is less useful if you cannot explain which claims are facts and which are hypotheses.
