Use this as a working guide, not a passive read. Skim the sections, copy the frameworks, then connect the advice to a real role, interview, call, or account you are working on this week.
A customer-success professional may understand users, value realization, and stakeholder risk, but an AE role adds pipeline creation, competitive selling, qualification, commercial control, and forecast accountability. Build evidence for those missing motions instead of assuming the transition is automatic.
Inventory What Transfers
Map discovery, executive communication, business reviews, risk management, adoption planning, and expansion support to the target job description. Separate work you owned from work you influenced.
Close the Commercial Gaps
Practice outbound account research, a concise call opener, first-call discovery, qualification, pricing conversations, and opportunity inspection. Learn the target company's stage and forecast definitions rather than relying on generic labels.
Create a Safe Practice Portfolio
Using a fictional company, produce a territory slice, account brief, discovery plan, stakeholder map, qualification memo, mutual action plan, and forecast note. Use public sources and clearly mark assumptions. Never reuse private customer information.
Build a 30-Day Evidence Sprint
Week one: inspect ten AE job descriptions and create a gap matrix. Week two: conduct two informational interviews and two discovery role-plays. Week three: build the portfolio. Week four: score the work with an AE manager or trusted seller and revise it.
Resume Translation
Replace generic “managed relationships” bullets with verified scope, actions, and outcomes. If you supported an expansion but did not negotiate or close it, say so. Show judgment under customer risk without inventing quota ownership.
Interview Questions
- How much pipeline must AEs self-source?
- What evidence advances an opportunity stage?
- How are discovery and qualification coached?
- What are the most common forecast errors?
- How does the team use post-sale insight during selling?
Use the AE 30-60-90 day plan to show ramp judgment, MEDDIC discovery questions to expose evidence gaps, and the Salesforce AE workflow to practice clean opportunity updates.
