Use this as a working guide, not a passive read. Skim the sections, copy the frameworks, then connect the advice to a real role, interview, call, or account you are working on this week.
Moving from SDR to account manager is not simply switching from cold accounts to warm ones. The evidence changes from opening conversations to protecting value across an existing relationship.
Map the Role Before You Prepare
Account manager titles vary. Ask who owns adoption, support coordination, renewals, commercial negotiation, expansion, and executive relationships. Determine whether the role carries a retention target, expansion quota, or both.
Translate Your SDR Evidence
Research becomes account context. Discovery becomes stakeholder and outcome mapping. Follow-up becomes mutual action tracking. CRM hygiene becomes renewal-risk visibility. Objection handling becomes a structured conversation about adoption, value, budget, or competing priorities.
Do not claim renewal or expansion outcomes you never owned. Label shadowing, projects, and simulations accurately.
Build a Proof Portfolio
Create a fictional account plan using public information. Include an account objective, stakeholder map, product-use hypotheses, open questions, risk register, 90-day engagement plan, and an expansion hypothesis that depends on verified value. Remove confidential employer or customer data.
Run Three Role-Plays
Practice a low-adoption check-in, a renewal-risk conversation, and an expansion discovery call. Score listening, diagnosis, stakeholder awareness, value evidence, next-step clarity, and escalation judgment.
Internal Transition Plan
Interview account managers, shadow calls with permission, volunteer for clean handoffs, document recurring post-sale context, and ask your manager for explicit readiness criteria. Maintain SDR performance while preparing; a neglected current role weakens the case.
Interview Questions
- What does the account manager own versus customer success?
- How are retention and expansion measured?
- What signals trigger executive involvement?
- How are product or support risks escalated?
- What evidence distinguishes top performers after ramp?
