Preview this playbookWhen a prospect asks for a discount before a demo, clarify what they are comparing and which scope they have in mind. Provide approved pricing information when available, and do not imply you can authorize a concession you cannot approve. A price question can be reasonable even when discovery is incomplete.
Salesforce's proposal guidance connects an offer to gathered research. The response exercise below applies that principle to an early commercial question; it is not a claim about any vendor's discount policy.
Separate the possible concerns
The buyer may be checking affordability, comparing packages, trying to understand the buying process, or negotiating. Ask a concise question such as, “Are you comparing a particular scope, or trying to see whether this could fit the budget at all?” Do not withhold every price detail simply to force a meeting.
| Concern | Useful clarification |
|---|---|
| Affordability | Which budget range and scope are being considered? |
| Package fit | Which capabilities and usage are required? |
| Competitive comparison | Are the offers being compared on equivalent scope? |
| Negotiation | Which terms are open for review under your process? |
Original fictional response
“I can explain the published package and check approved options. Before discussing a different price, could we confirm the users and workflow you need? If the standard package is outside the available budget, it is better to identify that now.”
This answer respects the question and avoids an invented deadline or an automatic percentage reduction. If your organization requires deal-desk approval, make that process clear.
Consider scope before a concession
A smaller legitimate scope may fit better than discounting a package the buyer does not need. Conversely, removing an essential capability just to reach a number can create a poor purchase. Review changes with the appropriate owners and explain their practical effect.
Do not offer a commercial trade unless it is approved and meaningful to both sides. Avoid promising implementation, support, or contract terms as informal extras when another team must authorize them.
Record the unresolved decision
After the conversation, note the actual concern, the scope discussed, and the next approved action. A request for a discount is not proof of purchase commitment. For practice, have a partner play a buyer who needs a budget range, then a buyer comparing two different packages. Your response should adapt to the underlying question rather than default to the same rebuttal.
