Use this as a working guide, not a passive read. Skim the sections, copy the frameworks, then connect the advice to a real role, interview, call, or account you are working on this week.
A BDR-to-AE promotion is not a reward for tenure. It is a decision about whether the company should trust you with opportunities, customers, forecasts, and revenue judgment. Build that evidence before a role opens.
Define the Actual Readiness Standard
Ask your manager which results, skills, and behaviors are required; who approves promotions; when headcount is reviewed; and what recent internal promotions demonstrated. Write the standard down and revisit it monthly.
Keep a Promotion Evidence File
Track quota and consistency, accepted opportunities, sourced pipeline using company definitions, account research, message experiments, call coaching changes, cross-functional work, and examples of judgment. Separate personal activity from downstream outcomes you did not control.
Build AE Skills in Sequence
Start with better qualification and handoffs. Then shadow discovery with a listening assignment, write post-call summaries, practice discovery, learn opportunity stages, inspect forecasts, and build a small account plan. Ask permission before joining customer calls or changing records.
Run a Monthly Readiness Review
Score discovery, business acumen, opportunity judgment, communication, CRM discipline, coachability, consistency, and ownership. Attach evidence and choose one gap for the next month.
Present the Case
Use a short document: readiness standard, performance evidence, skill evidence, remaining gaps, 30-day development plan, and requested next step. Ask for a decision process, not a vague endorsement.
If the Promotion Is Not Available
Clarify whether the blocker is readiness, timing, or headcount. Request a measurable checkpoint and date. Continue building portable evidence without threatening to leave.
