Use this as a working guide, not a passive read. Skim the sections, copy the frameworks, then connect the advice to a real role, interview, call, or account you are working on this week.
Moving from SDR to customer success is not simply leaving prospecting. The new role may own onboarding, adoption, risk, value realization, renewals, expansion, or a combination. Start by understanding the exact customer-success model at the target company.
Translate the Right SDR Evidence
Useful SDR evidence includes research, stakeholder mapping, accurate CRM notes, expectation setting, follow-through, difficult conversations, and learning from calls. Meeting volume alone does not prove you can manage a customer relationship.
Create a translation table:
| SDR evidence | Customer-success relevance |
| --- | --- |
| Account research | Customer context and stakeholder mapping |
| Discovery notes | Success-plan inputs and risk visibility |
| Objection handling | Difficult adoption or expectation conversations |
| Follow-up discipline | Commitments, action items, and customer trust |
| Cross-functional handoff | Coordination with sales, support, and product |
Learn the Post-Sale Journey
Map contract handoff, onboarding, first value, adoption reviews, support escalation, renewal, and expansion. Ask which outcomes the customer bought, which product signals matter, and where ownership changes.
Build a Transition Project
Choose a public software product you understand. Create a fictional, clearly labeled customer scenario. Produce a kickoff agenda, stakeholder map, 30-day adoption plan, risk register, success metrics, and executive review outline. Do not use real customer data.
Interview Story
“As an SDR, I learned to create accurate account context and set expectations before handoff. I want to apply that discipline after the sale, where success depends on adoption and durable outcomes. To test the transition, I built a customer plan for [scenario] and asked a CS professional to critique it.”
Questions for the Hiring Manager
- Which customer outcomes does this role own?
- How are adoption and risk measured?
- What is the account load by segment?
- Who owns renewals and expansion?
- How are support escalations coordinated?
- What distinguishes top performers after six months?
